Dress code

All students need to come to classes properly dressed and their hair must be pulled back from their face. This makes it easier for them to dance and for us, as teachers, to correct their work. Parents please help us with this as time is wasted in class if we have to ask pupils to change. The correct dance attire is as follows:

Clothing - Girls

  • Starlite, Tiny and Mini Classes: violet, sleeveless tank and pink tights
  • Junior, Intermediate and Senior classes: black, sleeveless tank (any style) and beige tights for all classes except for ballet (pink tights)

Clothing - Boys

  • All Levels - black shorts or black dance pants, white t-shirt and white socks

Dance shoes

  • Jazz - beige gore boot (black for boys)
  • Tap - beige tap shoes (black for boys) ; Starlite, Tiny & Mini "Mary-Jane" beige tap shoes with Velcro
  • Ballet - pink full sole slippers (black for boys)
  • Pointe Shoes and Highland shoes - as discussed with teacher
  • Running shoes for all Hip Hop classes. Must be clean indoor shoes. White shoes will be required for recital.

Examinations

We are a B.A.T.D. school. This means that we teach classes according to the British Association of Teachers of Dancing Syllabi. Our students progress year by year through grade and/or medal levels and attain certificates and medals after successfully sitting an examination, usually held in April or May. An examiner comes to our studio; either from another part of Canada or from Britain; and spends the week assessing the students' work. Each child is assessed individually and has the potential to follow through to professional levels. The examinations are standardized and therefore if your family moved to another area your child could fit into another B.A.T.D. school with ease.

Examinations are optional and students may take examination classes without taking the exam. We feel, however, that examinations give the students a personal sense of accomplishment and a goal to aim for. To date we have achieved 100% pass rate. We encourage students to start exams at the Starlite level as it increases their confidence in exams as they get older.

  • Jazz exams are taken in December using the ADAPT Syllabi.
  • Our Teen Recreation program is set up to allow teens, who have not danced at progressive levels, to take classes in a fun, relaxed atmosphere with students their own age.
  • Our Hip Hop classes are recreational. Opportunities for individual Hip Hop exams need to be discussed with the class teacher.

Recitals and Parent's Evening

In the month of December, we invite parents of Startite, Tiny and Mini students to come and watch your child(ren)'s classes . This has become, over the years, a very popular event and gives you the chance to see what your child has learned. Open House has been set for the week of Monday Dec 3- Saturday Dec 8/07.

At the end of the Winter/Spring term we have our annual recitals. Each class typically performs one routine. We try very hard to keep the cost to you for costumes and tickets as low as possible. We generally provide the costumes for the younger students on a rental basis as well as the older students whenever possible. Any items you may be asked to buy would either be a uniform requirement (as noted above) or an item of clothing that your child could wear again (i.e. a t-shirt).

We have a fabulous dress maker and our studio wardrobe grows by the year. The cost for older students can be as much as $70.00 per costume, however, we try to incorporate rental costumes for our Senior dancers as much as possible. We strongly believe that you should not have to spend a fortune for something that your child will wear for five minutes. The tickets for the show are intended to cover the cost of the hall rental, lighting and sound system.
